The register offers the official explanation for the tax deleted 1997-2000 (Broken link, this story has been taken down and I can no longer find anything else to reference this, contact me if you have something).

I beleive this was no mistake, I think that it was done deliberately to hide evidence that would support the mass infringement of copyright that is happening. If some records are missing studios can claim that they sold albums when they didn't and claim the records have been deleted so there is no way to prove it except their own personal records.

It's a complicated matter but what we know is that the powers at be have control over these type of records, when I saw the records had been deleted, knowing the specifics of my case I couldn't help but take it, at least to some extent personally.
